After Viserys's death, the Greens stage a coup in King's Landing and crown Aegon II Targaryen. The families of Rhaenyra and Viserys's second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower, are divided, becoming known with their supporters as the Blacks and the Greens. However, Daemon and Rhaenyra marry each other a decade later, making him consort. After Daemon names Baelon "The Heir for a Day," Viserys pushes him down the line of succession by naming Rhaenyra his heir apparent. Queen Aemma dies giving birth to Baelon, who dies shortly thereafter as well. Without a son, King Viserys's brother, Daemon, is the heir presumptive to the Iron Throne. Viserys is married to Queen Aemma Arryn, and together, they have one daughter, Rhaenyra. ![]() Viserys was chosen over his older cousin Rhaenys, wife of Lord Corlys Velaryon, on account of their sexes. His grandson Viserys won the vote by a landslide, and now sits on the Iron Throne. Near the end of the long reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, the Old King, a Great Council was held at Harrenhal to determine his successor, following the deaths of his sons Aemon and Baelon. The seventh and last kingdom, Dorne, defeated the Targaryens in the First Dornish War, and have thus remained independent ever since. Within a short period of time, six of the seven kingdoms surrendered to the Targaryen leader, Aegon Targaryen, unifying the kingdoms under his dynasty's rule. After the obliteration of Valyria in the Doom, the Targaryens launched a devastating invasion of Westeros using their three dragons, Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes, to spearhead their attack. Once a minor family of dragonlords in the vast Valyrian Freehold, the Targaryens were given control of the island of Dragonstone in the Narrow Sea some centuries ago. ![]()
